Social Networking is Not The Same as Socializing…

I do have a bone to pick with social networking sites, but let me first make it clear that I am an avid user of Digg, StumbleUpon, and of course Facebook. I first started using Facebook about, well hell, I gues it was about 2 years and a couple of months. Wow, I haven’t really ever thought about that before. Anyway, I love these social networking sights. I think they serve a lot of great purposes, however, they should not, nor do they replace actual socializing.

Talking to someone over Facebook or any other means other than face-to-face, and I guess a phone call, doesn’t mean they are your actual friends. I could ramble on and on about this, but really it was better said over at Tellinya.com. In reference to a “StumbleUpon Power User” discussing her “friends”:

Those are not your friends girl, they are acquaintances at most! Friends are those you can touch, those you know in real life, those who support you, those you talk to and stand by you in harsh times. Those who guide you and take you as you are. Those who care for you with no hidden agenda. Those are friends!

Cheers to that! I am proud to say that I have been blessed with some of the best friends in the world. It is important to have friends…REAL friends. I don’t mean that as in friends in real life, I mean as in people you know will be honest with you, care about you, and will be there for you through thick and thin.

The only thing from the post that I found a bit odd was this:

As we all know Japan has over 1.000.000 kids that never leave their rooms.

I for one did not know this. I don’t know how true that is, but it seems a bit far-fetched. I dunno, I haven’t seen any studies or reports from a more legit source saying such an odd fact is true, but I also haven’t sought out the information very actively.

So, in conclusion, I am probably not telling you anything you didn’t already know, hell this is pretty common sense. Next time you are writing a Facebook message just remember, if you need to contact someone, a phone call isn’t hard to make…
